Kata 型

The canon, connected.

Not another list of the twenty-six forms — that is the kata library. This is where each form sits in the technical graph: the kihon inside it, and the footage on file.

Where to start

The forms themselves are next door.

For what a kata is — the name and where it comes from, the kanji, the shape it travels on the floor, what it develops, and the Japanese it teaches — go to the kata library. All twenty-six are written there at length, and nothing on this page repeats them.

What is here instead is the part that only exists once kihon, kata and kumite are held in one system: which documented techniques the library records inside each form, and what reference footage has been found, checked and filed against it.

Movement counts and kiai points follow the convention most widely published in the Shotokan mainstream. They vary between organisations, which count preparatory and combined motions differently — treat them as a description of the form, not as a ruling.

The Heian series

Five short forms composed by Itosu Anko in Okinawa around the turn of the twentieth century to make a demanding art teachable. Between them they contain, in miniature, most of what the longer forms later ask for.

Coverage

Every kata has footage. Almost none of it is ours to show.

All 26 forms carry at least one checked, playable recording in the register. The two sources with kata coverage — SKIF New Zealand and Colchester JKA — both embed recordings uploaded by third parties, so those are filed with full attribution and held for a technical-committee rights decision rather than embedded here.
